Why we chose these activities ...

After discussing from the administrator, we decided to have the following activities...

a. recycling campaign (5Rs). 5Rs because we want students and teachers to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Renew and Respect Mother Earth. We could reduce waste by bringing our own cups/containers; we could cut down on styrofoam cups. By reusing bags while shopping, we create lesser rubbish. We also want to encourage each one to recycle - old newspaper, aluminum cans and plastic bottles which we come across every day. Apart from that, students and teachers can renew their ideas to reuse waste, like using a paper boxes as drawers in open shelves. Lastly, the need to respect Mother Earth by not polluting it.

b. eco enzyme (garbage enzyme). Making eco enzyme is not new but many of us do not know we could also reuse perishable waste. So having this activity in school, both perishable and none are put to good use. Many newspaper write-ups about the benefits of eco enzyme are often publish to educate us. So having this activity in school helps to reduce perishable waste produced in the school canteen and our home to good use. Besides that, the enzyme produce can be used to clean school toilets and pour into rivers to reduce the toxicity. The residues can be used as fertilizers in our garden.

c. school garden centre. We decided to plants fruit trees, vegetables, and herbs because we have enough flowering plants around the school. Fruit trees need longer time to mature but they are easier to manage, thus teachers and students need not spend much time in the garden. As we know, herbs have merit in many aspects - both medicinal and for just for herbal teas. Moreover, many students have not seen different kinds of herbs. By having this garden in school, teachers, and students not only able to learn more, they may even able to enjoy a cup of herbal tea in the garden! Growing vegetables require more attention among the 3 types of activities in the School Garden Centre. But because students and teachers are able to harvest between 2-3 months after sowing seeds, this will motivate them to upkeep it. Students and teachers can enjoy the fruit of their labour when plants began to bear fruits.

d. electricity smack down. Reducing the use of electricity is one of BP myscience energy optimization effort. If each student could just reduce 5 minutes of electricity a day, we could save 7500 minutes each day. One small CHANGE makes our planet greener and healthier.
e. water reduction campaign. Why must we reduce water? It's estimated that over 1 billion people live without access to clean drinking water, and that every eight seconds, a young child dies from lack of water or a waterborne disease (http://www.aboutmyplanet.com/environment/reduce-water-money). Turn Off campaign is aimed at training our students and teachers not to waste. If each of us reduces us by just 500ml a day, our school will be able to save 750 litres of water each day. A little each day is much in a year

f. more green more life. This campaign is meant to share with students and teachers that by staying green we could enjoy life too - a healthy life style and at the same time being kind to Mother Earth. We say No to Styrofoam cups. We Gotong Royong to keep our school compound clean. We Pledged! We make things from recyclable items. We use less plastic bags.

g. rakan muda cintai alam. We added this new program to our list because it starts in August and ends in October. The main reason is to keep this green challenge going and at the same time we will be able to generate some fund via this program. Our Wira Alam upkeep the reading corner - "Sudut Bacaan dalam Taman" together with students from the Photography Club, which not only promotes reading habit but also enjoying the sun and fresh air! And to further support this project, we planted 40 pots of 'pokok besi' (translated from Mandarin) stumps. When the green leaves appear, we will have a 'greener' library!

So with all these activities, we hope ... one small change somewhere will make our school environment greener and healthier.

Program BP myscience sedang berjalan di sekolah.

Dari data yang didapatkan, 83% pelajar dan semua guru tahu yang program BP ini dijalankan di sekolah. Pelajar Tingkatan 3 yang tidak terlibat secara langsung (SMK Sri Permata hanya melibatkan pelajar Tingkatan 1,2 dan 4) pun tahu bahawa program ini sedang berjalan. Ini menunjukkan publisti tentang program ini dijalankan dengan baik.

Adakah anda terlibat dalam aktiviti pemuliharaan alam di sekolah?

Dapatan data ini menunjukkan 60% pelajar tidak terlibat walaupun peluang penglibatan dibuka kepada pelajar Tingkatan 1,2 dan 4. Dapatan ini mengukuhkan lagi pemerhatian yang dibuat oleh pengetua sekolah, Encik Ong Hock Thye bahawa penekanan perlu diberi kepada penglibatan pelajar. Penglibatan kurang pelajar Tingkatan 1 walaupun diberi peluang sangat-sangatlah tidak memuaskan. Oleh itu, pihak sekolah perlu memberi perhatian terhadap aspek ini jika program hijau ini ingin diteruskan di sekolah. Tahap penglibatan guru perlu juga dipertingkatkan sejajar dengan penglibatan pelajar supaya guru-guru dapat membantu mengawasi aktiviti hijau pelajar.

Kita perlu bertanggungjawab terhadap bumi kita

Walau bagaimana pun, 83% pelajar dan 100% kalangan guru bersetuju bahawa bahawa kita perlu bertanggungjawab terhadap bumi kita. Kesimpulan yang boleh dibuat berdasarkan peratusan Soalan 3 ialah bahawa jika lebih publisiti dan penglibatan terancang, maka pelajar yang bertanggungjawab ini akan melibatkan diri.

Adakah anda terlibat dalam aktiviti pemuliharaan alam di rumah anda?

Peratus pelajar yang menjalankan aktiviti pemuliharaan alam ini hanya 48%, manakala yang tidak menjalankan dan tidak tahu merangkumi 52%. Oleh itu, budaya pemuliharaan yang dijalankan di sekolah haruslah juga disampaikan kepada pihak ibu bapa dan penjaga. Pihak sekolah perlu lebih melibatkan ibu bapa dan penjaga dalam program hijau di sekolah. Saya mencadangkan agar dalam setiap majlis utama sekolah seperti Hari Terbuka (Report Card Day), Hari Sukan, AGM PIBG dan juga Hari Anugerah Cemerlang diselitkan dengan program hijau. Dengan itu, ibu bapa dan penjaga yang menghadiri majlis-majlis ini di sekolah, dapat memperoleh pengetahuan atau boleh melibatkan diri.

Aktiviti pemuliharaan alam ini membebankan.

Dapatan ini mempamerkan pandangan yang berbeza antara guru dan pelajar. 81% guru mendapati aktiviti ini membebankan manakala 64% pelajar tidak berfikir demikian. Melalui temubual dengan guru-guru, menjalankan aktiviti fizikal tidaklah begitu membebankan tetapi kehendak laporan serta permohonan secara bertulis untuk pelbagai perkara membebankan. Saya bersetuju dengan pendapat mereka kerana kerapkali laporan tidak dapat disiapkan pada masa yang ditetapkan walaupun kerja-kerja fizikalnya telah berjalan. Untuk ini, dicadangkan satu format laporan yang 'mesra pengguna', pemantauan dibuat secara fizikal dan mengikut kesesuaian guru berkenaan.

Saya berminat terhadap aktiviti pemuliharaan alam di sekolah.

Dapatan menunjukkan 47% pelajar yang tidak berminat dan tak tahu serta 38% guru tidak berminat menunjukkan minat pelajar dan guru boleh dipupuk lagi. Antara cadangan yang dikemukan adalah seperti disediakan insentif dalam bentuk hadiah atau wang tunai. Contohnya, untuk setiap beg botol plastik yang dikumpul, kelas tersebut diberi ganjaran wang tunai untuk tabung kelas. Ataupun, diadakan penghargaan untuk usaha yang telah ditunjukkan. Misalnya, pada hari Terbuka, 2 kelas ditugaskan mendemonstrasi kepada ibu bapa cara-cara membuat Eco Enzyme.

Aktiviti pemuliharaan alam ini harus diteruskan tahun hadapan.

Pihak guru dan pelajar bersetuju program ini harus diteruskan pada tahun hadapan. Kemungkinan besar, 28 orang dari 49 orang pelajar Ting 4 merasakan ianya tidak perlu atas sebab mereka akan menduduki peperiksaan SPM. Pada pendapat saya, program ini harus melibatkan semua pelajar dari Tingkatan 1 hingga 5, memandang kejayaan sesuatu kempen seperti 'Kurangkan elektrik' bergantung kepada penglibatan semua. Pihak sekolah boleh membuat penyesuaian dengan melibatkan pelajar yang akan menduduki peperiksaan diawalkan. Dengan itu juga pihak sekolah akan sentiasa mempunyai tenaga pelajar yang akan meneruskan aktivti program.

Persepsi pelajar terhadap aktiviti berkaitan kitarsemula di SMK Permata, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Pengenalan
Kajian ini dijalankan bagi mendapatkan suatu gambaran terhadap perilaku pelajar peringkat menengah terhadap aktiviti kitarsemula. Seramai 47 pelajar yang berumur di antara 13-17 tahun dipilih secara rawak untuk mengisi borang kajiselidik pada bulan Ogos 2009. Soalan-soalan yang tertera di borang tersebut menjurus kepada persepsi mereka dan keprihatinan mereka terhadap aktiviti kitarsemula dan alam sekitar secara am. Respons pelajar diukur mengikut skala Likert (5 point Likert scale) dan telah dimasukkan ke dalam perisian Excel dan analisa frekuensi telah dijalankan.

Tabulasi data frekuensi:
a. Taburan jantina dan umur pelajar
Jadual Responden menunjukkan responden adalah terdiri daripada 43% pelajar perempuan dan 57% pelajar lelaki. Seramai 11 orang (23%) adalah pelajar perempuan berumur 13-15 tahun manakala 9 orang pelajar perempuan (19%) adalah berumur 16-17 tahun. Bakinya ialah responden eplajar lelaki berumur 13-15 tahun (23%) dan pelajar lelaki berumur 16-17 tahun (34%).

b. Taburan persepsi pelajar terhadap nilai sampah dan perilaku kitarsemula
Jadual Respons Pelajar (1) menunjukkan taburan persepsi pelajar terhadap nilai sampah yang menunjukkan bahawa majoriti (71%) bersetuju bahawa sampah ada nilainya. Walaupun ramai yang mengatakan demikian, hanya 31% pelajar atau 15 daripada jumlah 47 pelajar sahaja yang menyatakan bahawa mereka suka membawa barangan yang boleh dikitarsemula dari rumah ke sekolah.

c. Taburan keprihatinan terhadap kewujudan kelab berkaitan alam sekitar
Jadual Respons Pelajar (2) menunjukkan bahawa majoriti pelajar bersetuju bahawa kelab alam sekitar atau program melibatkan kitarsemula wujud di sekolah. Majoriti (90%) suka melibatkan diri dalam kelab berkaitan alam sekitar kerana berependapat ianya menyeronokkan dan suatu yang penting untuk diri mereka dan alam sekitar.
d. Taburan pandangan bahawa melibatkan diri dalam kelab alam sekitar menambahkan pengetahuan tantang alam sekitar

Jadual Respons Pelajar (3) menunjukkan bahawa pelajar yang suka melibatkan diri di dalam kelab alam sekitar atau kitarsemula berpandangan bahawa mereka dapat meningkatkan ilmu pengetahuan mereka mengenai perlindungan alam sekitar melalui penglibatan dalam program atau kelab yang berkaitan.

Jadual Respons Pelajar (4) pula menunjukkan bahawa pelajar yang tidak terlibat dengan kelab alam sekitar atau kitarsemula juga prihatin terhadap perlunya menjaga alam sekitar. Usaha pihak guru dan sekolah dalam menjayakan aktiviti keprihatinan alam sekitar telah dapat memberi kesedaran kepada ramai pelajar. Sejumlah 72% pelajar yang mengisi borang kajiselidik mengatakan sedemikian.

e. Taburan berkenaan pandangan penglibatan individu dalam program komuniti alam sekitar
Jadual Respons Pelajar (5) menunjukkan bahawa majoriti pelajar yang menyertai kajian soal selidik ini (79%) bersetuju dengan cadangan bahawa jika ramai individu melibatkan diri dalam program komuniti alam sekitar, lebih ramai dapat berbincang mengenai isu dan langkah-langkah untuk pemeliharaan alam sekitar.

Walaubagaimanapun, kajian ini mendapati hampir 50% pelajar yang terlibat dalam kajian ini belum mula untuk mengitarsemula dan 68% tidak pula menggalakkan ahli keluarga mereka untuk mengitarsemula. Lihat Jadual respons pelajar (6),(7).

Perbincangan dan Kesimpulan
Berdasarkan respons yang diberikan melalui borang soal selidik, kajian ini mendapati secara keseluruhannnya, usaha pihak guru dan sekolah dalam menjayakan aktiviti keprihatinan alam sekitar telah memberi kesedaran kepada ramai pelajar tentang keprihatinan kepentingan menjaga alam sekitar. Majoriti pelajar responden juga berpandangan bahawa menyertai kelab alam sekitar adalah menyeronokkan dan ianya dapat menambahkan pengetahuan mereka berkenaan alam sekitar termasuk mempelajari langkah â€langkah pemeliharaan. Kebanyakan responden kajian bersetuju dengan cadangan bahawa jika ramai individu melibatkan diri dalam program komuniti alam sekitar, lebih ramai dapat berbincang mengenai isu dan langkah-langkah untuk pemeliharaan alam sekitar.

Walaubagaimanapun, dari segi perilaku kitarsemula khususnya, hanya 31% pelajar atau 15 daripada jumlah 47 pelajar sahaja yang menyatakan bahawa mereka suka membawa barangan yang boleh dikitarsemula dari rumah ke sekolah. 50% pelajar yang terlibat dalam kajian ini pula belum mula untuk mengitarsemula dan 68% tidak pula menggalakkan ahli keluarga mereka untuk mengitarsemula.
Justeru, penglibatan pelajar berkaitan perilaku kitarsemula yang menjadi antara aktiviti penting dalam pemeliharaan alam sekitar masih agak rendah. Para pelajar di dalam kajian ini seramai 80% juga berpandangan bahawa rakyat Malaysia amnya lebih suka menjual suratkhabar lama misalnya kepada pembeli barangan kitarsemula suratkhabar yang memberikan pulangan kewangan dan lebih memudahkan. Kajian ini mendapati ramai pelajar amat prihatin tentang alam sekitar dan dari penglibatan aktiviti bercirikan alam sekitar telah sedikit sebanyak meningkatkan pengetahuan mereka.

Walaubagaimanapun, menzahirkan pengetahuan ini dalam bentuk perbuatan perlu dipertingkatkan. Pelajar-pelajar mungkin dapat menggunakan ruang serta aktiviti sediada, dibantu dengan penglibatan ibu bapa, memikirkan strategi atau langkah-langkah yang lebih menyeronokkan untuk menggalakkan lebih perilaku ke arah pemeliharaan alam sekitar melalui aktiviti kitarsemula. Pencapaian aktiviti ini pula perlu diberi pengiktirafan oleh pihak sekolah misalnya kerana kajian lain telah mendapati bahawa aspek ini amat penting bagi para remaja.

Penglibatan dari pihak luar dengan pihak sekolah misalnya dengan pembeli barangan kitarsemula juga mungkin dapat membantu dari aspek pulangan ekonomi. Secara amnya, strategi yang dilaksanakan perlu mengambilkira pelbagai faktor yang melibatkan kehendak pelajar, guru sekolah dan pihak yang berkepentingan, aktiviti dan masa yang sesuai, penyediaan ruang atau infrastruktur yang diuruskan secara berterusan dan kefahaman yang khusus terhadap kepentingan perilaku itu sendiri.

In less than a year of participation in BP myscience Challenge, we have seen many positive and encouraging green results. In this short period, we have substantially succeeded in creating awareness amongst our teachers and students on the need to save our environment and the ways to achieve it.

Continuous emphasis and implementation of recycling, saving water and electricity, growing plants, making eco enzyme and other green practices will definitely create significant results in reducing carbon footprints. We look forward to extend this initiative to year 2010, and strive for continuous improvements for the many years to come. Active participation and exposure to these activities to save planet earth will generate a significant impact on the students. The school aspires to produce a future generation who lives a green lifestyle.

Taking part in Bp myscience Challenge has brought SMK Sri Permata to embark on an exciting â€greenâ€ journey. And this green journey is not possible without the initiative, dedication, and commitment from the team of teachers and students involved. The tremendous effort and hard work is commendable and has produced ripples of â€greenâ€ waves to our students. A great heartfelt thanks to each and everyone of them.

15Oct: Planting 40 pots 'pokok besi'@library

On 15th October, Thursday a total of 19 students which had joined the Wira Alam program came to school to beautify the reading corner at the library. We were separated into 3 groups.
From 8 to 8.45 am, group 1 which consists of 7 students were asked to clear the plants while group 2, 6 students, were clearing and cutting the â€pokok besiâ€ into smaller pieces to be brought up to the library to plant. On the other hand, group 3 which had 6 students were weeding at the little garden in front of Taman Wawasan.

After cutting the trees and clearing up the place, all 3 groups of students brought those â€pokok besiâ€ up to the library. We planted it into 40 medium size pots and watered it all.
Everything was completed around 10am. Our teacher in-charge, Pn. Chua ordered food from the canteen and we enjoyed our meal till 10.15am. We then did some craft work at the assembly ground and pasted it on the eco notice board.

Due to time constraint, we did not managed to finish up the task that teacher gave on that very morning. So, we took it as homework. The task was to ask at least 2 students and a teacher each what do they think of the eco program in school.

We also took a few photographs and were dismissed at the time of 11am.

Ogo-Okt: Sudut Bacaan Dalam Taman

April - Mei:
Ahli-ahli Kelab Fotografi telah membersihkan kawasan yang ditanam dengan poko sempena Jubli Perak Sekolah pada tahun 2004. Disebabkan tidak ada pihak menjaga, maka kawasan tersebut tidak terurus dan pokok tersebut pun tidak hidup subur.
Setelah dibersihkan, pihak MPPJ telah menderma pokok-pokok hiasan. Kawasan tersebut pun dihiaskan dengan pokok yang diberi oleh MPPJ oleh ahli Kelab Fotografi yang telah mengorbankan waktu dengan datang 2 jam lebih awal untuk 3 perjumpaan.

Ogos - Oktober:
Apabila pihak sekolah memutuskan untuk mengambil bahagian dalam Program Rakan Muda Cintai Alam yang mempunyai objektif yang dekat dengan BP myscience challenge, Pn Chua SG, penasihat Kelab Fotografi serta Setiausaha PSS mencadangkan agar kawasan tersebut dijadikan Sudut Membaca Dalam Taman. Sumber kewangan telah dipohon melalui program Rakan Muda dan sebanyak RM770.00 telah diluluskan.
Sebuah meja dengan 4 tempat duduk simen telah dibeli dari FAMA Seremban dengan harga RM300 untuk tujuan tersebut.
Ramai pelajar suka menghabiskan masa di sudut tersebut - alasan mereka udara yang nyaman dan tidak terlalu panas.

Gardening At School's Garden

During PMR week which was held few weeks ago, my friends and I went for gardening in school. Eight of us started at about 8.15 a.m. Together with us was our school teacher Pn.Yong. Some of our activities were pulling the dead weeds out, cleared the soil from unwanted grass and watered the chillie plants.

Gardening was sort of fun even we felt a little tired. We worked together as a team. First, we plucked out all the dead weeds for the reason that it is not functioning anymore. Secondly, we cleared out all the unwanted grass out from the soil followed by loosening the soil. The reason of loosening the soil is to enhance the aeration of the soil.
Lastly, we put some fertilizers on each rows of the soil. We watered the plants as it was dry. After all the hard work, we were rewarded with some rambutans , a cold milo ice , some â€kuih-muihâ€ and curry puffs as well. We were happy as we get to lend a hand to teacher and did something we called among ourselves â€exerciseâ€.

21 Oct: Report on the BP MyScience Essay Writing Competition

Report on the BP MyScience Essay Writing Competition

This competition was held on 17th June 2009 between 12.00 pm and 1.30 p.m at the school hall. A total of 52 students took part in this competition of which 31 of them were from the morning session and 21 from the afternoon session. The BP MyScience school team took about 3 months to finalize the winners.

There were not any outstanding ideas on how we should spend the prize money towards conserving the environment. 10 essays in total were shortlisted, 6 from the morning session and 4 from the afternoon. The BP MyScience team choose the best essays from those shortlisted.

The prize winning essay for the morning session goes to Nur Hanna bt. Safri from 5 Mesra and for the afternoon session, the prize goes to Mohamad Asyraf bin Mohd Nasir from 2 Amanah.

21 Oct: Veg Plot Report

On the 21st of August 2009, members from the Science and Mathematics club as well as the teacher in-charge, Pn Yoong S.N and a few afternoon session ECOs came to school in the morning at 8.30 to maintain the garden.

Due to the heavy rain that morning, only about 4 members were present. However, we managed to clear the weeds. We also water the plants and also planted some beans on the empty ground as well as fertilized it.

Besides that, the five of us including Pn Yong had cleaned every part of the garden so that there may be no place for mosquitoes to breed.

After 2 months of hard work, the bittergourd that we planted in the earlier part of the year had bare its fruit. We plucked and realized that there were more than 10 bittergourds which were already ripe.

Report on the Herb Garden (Mac - Oct)
The Science garden was officially handed over to the BP Science Challenge team in March to become the Herb Garden. A core group consisting of the teacher adviser, Miss Liew KY and five Form 4 students was formed. The core group met to draw out a layout plan of the garden and discussed what to do for the garden. Below is a diary of some of the activities carried out.
March : The garden was overgrown with weeds and rubbish was strewn all over the place. A big tree kept the sunlight out. The place was dark and gloomy. It was mosquito infested. Students from Form 4S and 4G started clearing the garden. These students cleared the rubbish and did weeding for two weeks.

Another group of students from Form 4J and 4B got rid of weeds growing in the pots . These two classes started on another part of the garden. Unwanted containers were removed to prevent the breeding of mosquito larvae.

Some student continued his work after school.
Even the Form 3 students were involved. They saw the older students working earlier on and asked for permission to do some work in the garden during recess time. The students took two weeks to clear the garden. Other students became interested and volunteered to do some work during their free time.

April: Once the garden was ready, students started work cleaning up the surroundings of the garden. These students werethe core group. They worked on the garden after school every Wednesday starting from March. They decided to build a place for composting on 29 April.
May: Students started planting in certain parts of the garden. Plants were donated by students and teachers. Some Form 5 students volunteered to prepare another part of the garden for planting.

Because the place was rather muddy especially after a rain, pavers were put in on 5 May. Some drain covers were recycled too to save money.
This place inside the garden was used to store rubbish. The core group decided to turn this into a store for eco enzymes and equipment.
June: Students planned to do some landscaping in another part of the garden. Students partitioned the area with bricks.

Students planted fruit trees such as passion fruits, lemon, lime and mulberry. Students added soil and fertilizers. Form 2 students were involved.
Students prepared an area for the planting of grapes.

July: Students prepared a suitable site for the planting of dragon fruit plants.
Students mixed cement and sand to make a pillar for the dragon fruit plants. The pillar was ready after two days. The pillar is finally up and the dragon fruit plants were planted.
1 July : A group of students including the core group made a visit to FAMA in Seremban to familiarize themselves with herbs.

August: Subsequently, FAMA donated some plants and soil to the school. All these arrived on 4 August. Students planted the herbs donated by FAMA.
One core group member pouring organic compost onto one of the plants. One week later, the plant dried up due to excessive fertilizer. The students learned to use fertilizer in moderation now.

August, September, October: Herbs were regularly harvested and used by teachers. They were also introduced to teachers who were ignorant on the usage of herbs.
Students trimmed the tree. Students cleared weeds and rubbish.

September: Students did maintenance work. They also planted new plants. Students did some weeding as well as harvested some herbs.
Students planted roselle.

October: After the PMR, Form 3 students constructed a stand for a potted plant. They were proud of their efforts.

Many hands made the work light.

Program Rakan Muda Cintai Alam telah dilancarkan pada bulan 7 Ogos 2009. Pihak sekolah telah memilih masa pelancaran pada pukul 12.34:56 tengah hari sempena mengingati masa dan tarikh istimewa iaitu 123456789.

Memandangkan bulan Ogos - Sept adalah bulan puasa, jadi aktiviti telah dirancang untuk dijalankan selepas sambutan Hari Raya dan sebelum bermula peperiksaan akhir tahun.
Antara objektif Program Rakan Muda Cintai Alam ialah " ... menghargai keindahan alam semulajadi. Ianya dapat meningkatkan kesedaran tentang Pentingnya menjaga dan mengekalkan keindahan dan kebersihan alam sekitar. ... " dapat dihubungkaitkan dengan program BP myscience yang sedang berjalan.

Dengan adanya program ini, sumber kewangan yang diterima melalui program ini adalah dalam RM2,400. Sumber kewangan ini dapat terus meanmpung perbelanjaan untuk menambahbaik aktivti yang sedia ada serta mengadakan aktiviti baru seperti Sudut Membaca Dalam Taman.

a)Results of Aluminium rings collection Inter-class Competition
The third and final collection of aluminium rings was held on the 31st of July.
The gross total number of rings collected during the period of the competition was 78,938 !
The winners are as follows:
First : Class 5S - 20,082 rings
Second: Class 4S - 16,082 rings
Third: Class 5C - 15,976 rings

A cash prize of RM 150 in total ,donated by Interact Club of the school , was awarded to each of the above classes .
First :RM 70
Second :RM 50
Third :RM 30
b) Prizes were also given out to the class which brought the most amount of newspapers for the newspaper-collection Inter-class Competition held on the 14th and 15th of July. Each student of Class 5C including the Form-Teacher were given prizes, courtesy of Papermate and Syarikat Chee Wah . This was to reward them for their team-effort and to encourage them to be aware of recycling as one of the ways to reduce the carbon footprint.

The school would like to thank each and every student who participated in these competitions , as this showed their support for the Recycling Program.

Hopefully, this will instill a sense of caring for the environment and make recycling a part of their daily routine.

15 Aug: ECO Enzyme Report

This batch of Garbage Enzyme was done on the 4th of April 2009. On the 15th of August 2009, the Garbage Enzyme was harvested. The uniform-bodies had participated in this activity. They were requested to bring a pail and a few bottles (1.5 liter). The teacher in-charge for this particular activity is Miss Loo. The whole activity took around an hour and half to conduct. After the activity was completed, Miss Loo instructed that the enzyme to be kept at the Taman Sains.

This activity started by a short briefing about how to do. Everyone that participated in this activity had a jolly good time. Miss Loo said to use our hand to squeeze the filter bag because the Garbage Enzyme is very good for the skin. Some of the Garbage Enzyme had a very bad smell because the container was not close properly. After harvesting the garbage enzyme, they had to put it into the bottle that was brought by the student. The student that participated in this activity had finish the harvesting and later after that the students cleaned the area.

Through this activity, the ozone layer will be healed because the gas released by this garbage enzyme to the atmosphere is carbon trioxide, CO3.We hope that all students of SMK SRI PERMATA will give their full support and co-operation for this activity to be successful.

8 Aug: A Day Trip to Enderong Organic Farm

The day trip was held on the 8th of August 2009 which was on a Saturday. The Enderong Organic Sdn Bhd is located at Tanarimba Bukit Tinggi, Janda Baik in Pahang. It took us about 3 hours to reach there. There were a total of 30 people including students and teachers who went on that trip. Students who went on the trip are members of Kelab Pencinta Alam and the BP myscience's ECOs.

The cost of the trip was RM650 in total. The money for the trip was sponsered by Justlife (RM200), BP myscience seed money (RM 200) and from the schoolâ€s unit ko-ko (RM 250).
We were told that an organic farm must be 40 km away from the city centre because of dirty rain water and contaminated city pollution. That is why Enderong Organic farm is located on the highlands. Furthermore, plants at the farm can receive more sunlight when it is on the highlands.

Enderong Organic farm is 2 acres wide and it is used to educate farmers on organic farming. There are many types of fruits, herbs and vegetables planted there such as terung, cabbage, ladies finger, lada, sawi, bayam and more. Enderong Organic practice crop rotation which is one of the procedures to obtain high quality plants. Crop rotation is an agricultural practice in which different crops are cultivated in succession on the same area of land over a period of time. This practice ensures that soil fertility is maintained.

Other than that, Enderong Organic uses biological control instead of chemicals to get rid of pests. This ensures the healthy being of all the plants. Weeds are also pulled out so the plants can receive maximum nutrients which can be absorbed easily without any competition.

Another technique to produce healthy organic plants is by mixing the soil with proper nutrients which are provided by the â€home-madeâ€ fertilizers (compost). Compost gives out nutrients like phosphorus, fertilizer and oxygen. Compost is made of animal feaces (such as chicken, cows, etc), food waste and even dried leaves. The ingredients are then mixed together and are collected under a small hut which will then be left to decompose and allow reactions to take place. After it has reached a certain stage, it can be used to give nutrients to the plants.
We were told that organic vegetables and fruits are good for our health because it is free of pest poison exposure and it is very well taken care of. That is why organic food is much more expensive compared to normal food. Fruits and vegetables produced by Enderong Organic are distributed to Justlife which is avaible all over Malaysia.

Our trip to Enderong Organic farm is a fun, memorable and informative trip. We are very lucky to get a chance to go on this trip. We would like to thank Enderong Organic farm and teachers who planned the trip for us. We have learnt a lot from the trip and this educates us to improve our farming/gardening skills. We hope to come again with more students with us next time and in hope to create awareness on living green and healthy.

5 Ogos: Laporan Pengurangan Air Di Sekolah

Langkah Penjimatan Air Di Tandas Sekolah Sri Permata

Satu botol 500ml yang diisikan dengan air dimasukkan ke dalam tangki simbah.

Aras air tangki simbah menjadi lebih tinggi, dan ini dapat menjimatkan 500ml atau Â½ liter air setiap anda 'flush' selepas gunakan tandas. (sumber:http://www.dbku.gov.my/recycle.htm)

Apabila botol diambil keluar, air akan mula mengalir ke dalam tangki simbah. Ini menunjukkan bahawa botol air 500ml memberi kesan kepada tahap air.

Anggaran 6 tandas di sekolah yang digunakan sebanyak 30 kali sehari oleh kira-kira 1400 orang pelajar, sekolah dapat mengurangkan penggunaan air sebanyak - 6x30x500ml=90000ml sehari.

22 Jul: Sumbangan Pokok dari MPPJ

Cik Liew KY, guru yang menjaga Herbal Garden sekolah memerlukan pokok-pokok. Memandangkan kos terlibat agak banyak, beliau telah memohon terus dari Majlis Perbandaraan Petaling Jaya.

Pihak MPPJ respons dengan menderma 200 pohon pokok. Cik Liew dijemput ke nusery MPPJ untuk memilih pokok.
Selain pokok herba seperti bunga raya dan senduduk, Cik Liew juga membawa balik 50 pohon pokok hiasan yang telah ditanam di sekeliling sekolah.

Pihak sekolah mengucapkan terima kasih kepada MPPJ atas sokongan yang di dalam program BP myscience di sekolah.

17-18 Jul: Changing fluorescent tubes to energy saving bulbs

During one of the BP myscience meetings in school, Mr. Ong HT, our school HM emphasized the need to reduce electricity bill. One of the ideas shared by Puan Cheah Tean Hong, our Guru Kanan Bidang Kemanusiaan was to change old fluorescent tubes to energy saving bulbs. She also offered to sponsor the cost of the bulbs and workmanship.

We have chosen the row of lights on the 1st floor for 2 reasons:
1. the lights are switched on from 7pm till 7am the next morning every day, and
2. Not easily vandalized because the grills will be locked at night.

11 fluorescent tubes (20w) were changed to energy saving bulbs (11w). Though the difference is only 9 watts, we stand by this phrase ... those who gather little by little will increase it.

Thanks Pn Cheah for your generosity! She also encouraged re-using plastic bags in the house and using tiffin carrier for takeaway food.

Collection of old newspaper, books, magazines and cardboard containers

As planned, pupils and teachers of both sessions brought these items on the 14th & 15th of July. Newspapers, old books and items made from cardboard brought by pupils were stacked in front of their respective classes on the assembly ground. â€Kelab Pencinta Alamâ€ members recorded the height of the stack for each class over the 2 days . The collection on the 14th of July was a little disappointing. However , the next day, on the 15th of July , it was impressive! Please refer to table below:

13 - 31 July: Green Corners in Class Notice Board

Aim: to share with other members of the class Green Messages

All classes are encouraged to setup a green corner in their class notice boards with their own creativity. Green messages are posted in order to share with the rest of the students.

After the MNS talk (school links) students who represented their classes are asked to update their boards with what had been shared by the MNS representatives. In this way, the 3 students who came can share what they have learnt with the rest using their green corners.
Incentives like the best board in class will be given bonus points.

Quizes are carried out during Monday assemblies to encourage students to read messages posted on notice board.

13Julai: Projek Wira Alam Jabatan Alam Sekitar

Pada akhir bulan Jun, pihak sekolah memohon ke Jabatan Alam Sekitar untuk menjalankan projek Wira Alam. Projek ini dijalankan dengan tujuan untuk menggalakkan pelajar terus menjalankan aktiviti hijau sepanjang masa. Dengan adanya Buku Aktiviti ini, pelajar perlu menjalankan aktiviti seperti memungut sampah, membuang sampah di tong sampah, menjimat elektrik dan seterusnya.

Terdapat 3 tahap untuk projek ini iaitu Wira Diri, Wira Komuniti dan akhirnya Wira Alam.
Buku aktiviti ini diberi percuma oleh Jabatan Alam Sekitar.

Kempen promosi dijalankan oleh ECO Irfan Rosli, ECO Asyraf dan ECO Adam (sesi petang). Promosi ini berjaya menarik minat 100 orang pelajar Tingkatan 1 dan 2. Buku Aktiviti Wira Diri diterima oleh pihak sekolah pada 7 Julai dan aktiviti dimulakan dengan rasminya 13 Julai 2009. Tempoh menjalankan aktiviti-aktiviti adalah antara 1-3bulan.

7 July: 200 Green Bags from Jaya Jusco

2. Constant reminders to teachers and students on 'Switch Me Off' campaign i.e. to switch on the lights and fans ONLY when needed.
3. Reports from teachers on duty that there have been fewer cases of classes not switching off their lights and fan.
4. Classes with reminders on the switches will be given bonus marks.

A Word of Encouragement for All ...

SMK Sri Permata has been very privileged to participate in the BP myScience Challenge that is currently taking place until November 2009. This is an immense challenge to do our part in protecting planet earth. Mr Ong and many teachers have been very supportive and committed to undertake this challenge. Besides aiming to win this challenge, many of us hope to create and instill awareness amongst our students and teachers to do our part in saving mother earth.

We have planned to carry out a number of activities in supporting this massive effort initiated by BP Malaysia. Pn Chua, our BP Challenge coordinator frequently comes to give me updates on the development of activities. She is always bubbling with ideas and very inspiring. Because of her enthusiasm and total involvement, I did not have the heart to reject her when she asked me to write something on BP Challenge. Despite of the fact that I am actually very busy these few days, I try to write. Her latest idea is on rain harvesting. She has discussed with me and I think it is fantastic and workable. She will be bringing the core team to Ma District Turtle Sanctuary on 29 May. I am quite certain that they will bring back exciting experiences and ideas to share with all of us.

To date, all teachers in charge have kicked off their respective projects well. Generally, many are moving on fine except that our studentsâ€™ involvement has not been very encouraging. However, I can see that teachers are still very committed to making this challenge a success, and I know they will continue to encourage and motivate students to get involved. We are positive that with the right level of encouragement, especially after the mid term exam, we will see better participation of students in our green activities. It will be good to see that every class has green messages, or make green pledges and every class participates in recycling. Recycling is one important activity that can contribute tremendously to reducing the damage mankind is imposing on mother nature. It is a simple task and everyone can do. But instilling awareness and getting students to practise recycling is an uphill task for Pn Shamala and her Interact Club members. Her team will launch off again after the school holidays. I think form teachers play a significant role in achieving results.

They are so many activities to write about. I guess I will just focus on a few that are currently being carried out. Many activities could not be carried out lately because of the mid year exam. Teachers will start them off again after the mid year holidays.

This generation has suffered the impact of technology since a young age, and missed out on the simple pleasures of enjoying nature. Getting them to be involved give them new experiences. These are rare learning opportunities for them. They learn to use garden tools when clearing the Science Garden, getting ready for planting herbal plants. Some learn to differentiate weeds from vegetable seedlings! Like Pn Chua said the other day, many students may not have seen fruit trees, not to mention having the opportunity to pluck the fruits from the trees themselves. Growing up in an urban area actually deprived them from having the fun we teachers had when we were young.

En Zahir and some prefects have planted many fruit trees next to our vegetable plot and on the area next to D Block. He thinks big. He intends to start a papaya garden on the area adjacent to our Strong Room, planting a variety of papaya trees. Imagine when all trees bear fruits, it will be a real joy for our students to see, to touch, to feel and to taste the fruits. I believe this may generate feelings of love for plants in some of them.

So besides greening our school as one of the activities to gain points for BP Challenge, we give them rare experiences that urban students missed. We may even be able to instill a love of nature in them. Well, is this possible? Yes! Let us have this big dream with us.

Miss Liew once talked about putting some garden chairs in the herbal garden and teachers and students can go and enjoy the fresh herbal drinks. I think that's a very creative idea. Making drinks from fresh leaves and drinking it amidst fresh smell of herbs will be a great experience. Herbal tea can refresh us, help us to distress and add plus points to our health. From greening our school to save environment, we reap other benefits as well. I am sure many are looking forward to see our first ever herbal garden of Sri Permata.

It may take a few months of hard work for the herbal garden to take shape, and it will take a year or two of continual effort and work for the trees to bear fruits. But with team effort and support from everyone, we will reach there.

Together we will be able to make a difference.

24 June - 3 rd July 2009: School Garden Centre: Our first Vegetable Harvest

Our Vegetable plot produced the first harvest, a 'sawi' with white stems. Our HM, Mr Ong HT was given the honour to harvest the vegetables. Students and ECOs who witnessed the harvesting were thrilled at the size of the veg.

The veg is then distributed among teachers and students.

Our 3"-tall bitter gourd has now grown to a beautiful plant with many yellow tiny flowers. The first bitter gourd was kept as seedlings.

12 July 2009Â : 2nd Report - 5Rs

Collection of aluminium rings
The second collection of aluminum rings was done on the 25th and 26th of June. A total of 11 classes in the morning session handed in their collection. The classes were as follows: 3C, 3D, 3H, 3I, 4B,4M, 4S, 5B, 5D, 5M and 5S. The total collection was 26,125 rings! A big thank you to all these classes. Therefore, the gross total from the first and second collection is 42, 766 rings!
The three highest collections so far are as follows:-
4S - 12,538
5S - 5,501
3I - 5,257
The last collection will be on the 31st of July after which the top three classes with the most number of rings collected will be announced and prizes awarded. These rings will be donated to the kidney dialysis centres .
Collection of recyclable material
Pupils have been urged to separate their rubbish and throw them into the correct bins according to the label on the bins: PAPER/PLASTIC/OTHERS. A few more cardboard bins labelled "PAPER" or "PLASTIC" have been placed along the corridors to collect recyclable paper or plastic products.

The school has decided to go on an aggressive recycling campaign.
During the assembly, the Interactors talked about the importance of recycling. They also demonstrated how to open up and flatten cardboard containers and showed a few examples of cardboard containers which can be recycled, for example, pizza boxes, toothpaste boxes, biscuit and cereal boxes etc.
Pupils and teachers of both sessions have been told to bring these items on the 14th & 15th of July.

3rd July 2009: School 2nd Open Day Report Card Day

The last report card day, the ECOs demonstrated to parents how to prepare eco (garbage) enzyme. This time, the 2nd Open Day, Mrs Rani Wemel, a parent and a committee member of the school PTA managed to get 8000 posters and 600 CDs from Jabatan Alam Sekitar. The PTA showed their commitment to 'green living' in the school by sharing the awareness with parents using posters and CDs. Each parent was given 4 types of posters and a Tak Pa jingle produced by DOE. The CDs were also distributed to all the teachers and school staff.

22 June 2009: School's Â Green CO-OP Day

On the 22nd of June 2009, Koperasi of SMK Sri Permata Berhad had celebrated the fourth School's Co-operative Day. The theme for this year was "Integration of School and Adult Co-operators Road to Excellency". Co-operative Day is celebrated annually on the 22nd June since 1995 to expose school citizens and the community to aware the role played by co-operative to train the students to instill strengthness and good values in them. This year we celebrated with a green theme, in conjunction with the on-going BP myscience Challenge.

Principal Mr Ong Hock Thye who is also The Chairman of School's Co-operative Board Committee officiated the celebration by watering some newly planted Ashoka trees which signified the co-operative's earnest in supporting the BP My Science Challenge.

On the Co-operative Day, the school co-operative had sold some herbs and flowering plants, cactus and garbage enzyme with affordable price at RM3.00. The symbolic drink of co-operative, C2 are sold frozenly at RM 1.20. Profits from items sold, RM250.00 was contributed to the BP My Science Challenge.

The school had a talk based on solar energy on the 23rd of June 2009 by the Malaysia Nature Society (MNS). Four representatives from the Malaysian Nature Society conducted this session. The school's eco team and 3 representatives from each class went into the hall to listen to the talk. We also had the chance to use the solar kit for an experiment.

This talk was then continued by an activity in the class. The 3 representatives from each class had to go back to their class and find some information about solar energy and paste it up on the class notice board. This competition was held on the 17th of June 2009 at the SMK Sri Permata School Hall. A total of fifty-two students, thirty-one students from the morning session and twenty-one students from the afternoon session, battled their wits to pen down their lucrative ideas on ways to save the environment. The title of the essay for this contest was "How I Would Spend the RM5, 000.00 Prize Money towards Saving the Environment". Contest entries will be judged in two categories and the results will be announced in a month's time.

17 June 2009: Using Recyclable Item @Science & Maths Society (S&MS) Activity

S&MS organised an activity whereby members had to use recyclable item to make things. Members were divided into groups and each group was provided with newspapers, magazines, plastic bottles, aluminium cans, scissors, cellophane tape and glue. The members let their creative juice flow and came up with creations such as mini fountain complete with flowing water which can give those sold in the shops a run for their money; and a turbo thrust aircraft complete with various corporate logos. We even had a recycling monster who would go after anyone who does not recycle! All in all. everyone had loads of fun.

17 June 2009: Making Garbage Enzyme by ALL Afternoon Classes

Ms Loo SY, teacher-in-charge together with ECO Lavinesh organised another garbage enzyme making for this term with ALL the afternoon classes. There are 19 classes in the afternoon session: 1 class of Remove, 9 classes of Forms 1 and 8 classes of Forms 2.
The class monitor and assistant were involved in making the the enzyme which took only 20 minutes to prepare. Students from each class contributed to the fruit peels and the school provided them with the brown sugar.
This batch of enzyme will need another 3 months, and will be harvested in September.

Silent tranquility, untouched purity and unrivalled beauty. Those were my first impression of Ma Daerah Turtle Sanctuary upon our arrival there. We had to follow a long and winding trek along 1.3 km of rough terrain, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature in all its splendor before being greeted with the place we would call home for the next 3 days. A brief stop for registration yielded us a bottle of mineral water each to be used throughout our stay as the only source of water in Ma Daerah are refill stations situated around the compound. After being assigned to our designated tents, we proceeded to unpack and unwind after a very long bus ride that left us aching and quite fatigued. We worked ceaselessly for the better half of the night in order to finish our school'™s exhibition board and presentation in time for the next dayâ€™s program. We were driven by the sole incentive of watching turtles lay eggs on the beach. But, alas we were so caught up in finishing our work that by the time we were done, the mother turtle had already left! However, as a small consolation, we managed to let loose a baby turtle each. We were all mesmerized and amazed at the sheer agility of the baby turtles as they scurried towards the dark, deep ocean.

The next morning, we awoke to the magnificent and awe-inspiring sunrise as we jogged around the beach with the glorious sun in the distance. It was undoubtedly one the most picturesque scenes we had ever behold. Reluctantly, we were forced to turn our backs on the beach to continue with the dayâ€™s activities. The Sembang Sains session was conducted with speakers from various government agencies and non-governmental organizations. They each spoke on current issues surrounding the natural world.

In all honesty, I thought that the food given on camps and field trips range from poor to mediocre. Fortunately, I was wrong. The food was actually pretty good and thereâ€™s nothing better than sitting together with friends enjoying a delicious meal after a long day of strenuous activities. After lunchtime, it was time for the presentations! Each school is required to present for 10 minutes on why they deserve to be in the competition. The participants explained the measures implemented thus far by their respective schools and future plans underway to be â€œgreenerâ€ schools and to reduce our carbon footprint. Frankly, our jaws dropped at the amount of effort and dedication that the other schools had put in their presentations, be it with singing or acting, in order to pull off such phenomenal performances. When it was our turn to present, we were definitely intimidated by the presentations by the other schools. Thankfully we did rather well considering we were burning the midnight oil just the previous night to get the presentation right. I, personally, have realized that the war has only begun and that the other schools are really in it to win the competition.

The last night of our trip was the most eventful. It started off with some light and easy games such as a â€œtreasure huntâ€ where we were tasked to find answers to questions in the exhibition boards from other schools and a competition of making a piece of art from recycled objects. In the latter aspect, the teams with an artistic flair excelled the most. Our hopes were high that another round of turtle watching, which was next on the agenda, would finally give us a chance to see a mother turtle land on the beach. We lied ourselves down on the cold, soft sand and stared above at the starry night, littered with millions of stars, while the sea breeze whistled past and the moon shone at a distance. At that point, each of us were engulfed in our own thoughts.

As for me, I reflected on how God had created a beautiful, majestic and perfect world. I also thought of how much this trip has taught me on the importance of team work and the spirit of togetherness towards a common objective. That is the reason why the Earth is where it is now; polluted and on the brink of destruction as the inhabitants of Earth do not stand together and are not united to fight the forces that consume our very existence. The forces of greed and the undying love for money has cost us what should be held most dear to us, but sadly is cast aside, namely the protection and preservation of our planet. Oh, how I pity the turtles whose numbers have deteriorated dramatically over the past 10 years and are now a dying breed. And this is all because of our actions. As I lay silent on the beach that final night of our trip, I realised that the Earth is reaching its breaking point of damnation. There is an urgent need for you and I to change the way we think and act in order to save our most treasured possession, Earth, our home.

Vegetable Garden In School

Despite regular watering and `care`, the transplanted `sawi` seedlings failed to grow and were dead in less than 10 days.

Postmortem:

1. The weather is too hot and dry.

2. The soil is unsuitable for the `fragile` `sawi` seedlings.

3. The students accidentally stepped on them - unable to differentiate betweeen seedlings and weeds.4. The `gardeners` lack `green` fingers!

After postmortem and discussion, we decided on planting a more hardy vegetable - bitter gourd seedlings. This was done yesterday evening. Hope they will survive!

Note: The gourd seedlings planted along the fence earlier this month are thriving

Water Reduction Campaign

Turn Off Campaign is aimed at reducing the use of water. Pn Chong SF, teacher-in-charge has reminded students during assemblies not to waste water when using the toilets and also washing their hands.

She also puts up posters and reminders in the toilets:

Apart from that, she has also got the school workers to monitor if there is any leak in the system. All leaks will be fixed immediately.

Recycling Campaign Report

We have been collecting plastic bottles and aluminium tin cans during recess. Students throw these items into bins placed in the canteen. Interact members take turns to be on duty during recess to make sure that students do not throw other items into these bins. The awareness is there among students. However, we want them to rinse the bottles and cans before they discard them so that they can be stored until such time we have enough to sell them off as recyclable materials.

Students have also been requested to bring old newspapers every Friday . The response has not been very good but we will continue to make this request.We have also started a competition among classes to collect 'aluminium rings' from the aluminium tin cans. All classes collect the rings from each student in the class and the total collection from the class is given to the Interact members are in charge.

Altogether there will be 3 collections : 30 April, 25 June and 31 July.

At the end of the 3 collections the 3 classes with the highest , second highest and third highest total collection will be announced and awarded prizes. The first collection was done on the 30 April. 8 out of 23 classes in the morning session handed in their collections.

The total no. of rings collected was 16,500 These classes were 3A, 3I, 4J, 4S, 5A, 5B, 5C and 5S. The 3 highest collections were from 4S which collected 5000 rings, 5A - 4690 rings and 3I-2279 rings .

Â Hopefully, more classes will take part in the second collection.

Electricity Smack Down: Talk by FOMCA

On 6th of May 2009, FOMCA, Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association, came to SMK Sri Permata to give a talk on the conservation of electricity. All monitors and heads of cleanliness of Forms Remove, 1 to 5 classes participated in this event. The talk was held from 10:30 am to 12:30noon.

At 10:05 am, students gathered in the hall, while the lecturers set up the electronic devices with the help of school teachers.
At 10:30 am, the lecture started. The lecturer started with introducing the students to the concept of energy.

We were told that, the ventilation fans in the hall are actually using about the same power as a 1 1/2 horse power air-conditioner.

He then talks about the usages and consumers of electricity, the economy, and the development that energy had created. He also tells the students how much they're wasting energy through everyday life, and that they can only changeby using less energy and more efficiently.

After that, he explains the route electricity takes from the power plant to consumers. He then shows the students energy auditing by auditing the energy used for a TV and a 1000W air-conditioner.

For an air-conditioner, these are the statistics if they use them for 5 hours a day: RM 397.85/year for one air-conditioner, RM 795.70/year for two, RM 1193.55/year for three, and RM 1591.40 for four.

He conducted a survey on the usage of water and energy.Â Our usage of electricity can be checked through their website, www.switch.org.my, by using the calculator provided. He did a quick calculation on that website to show us that energy efficient appliances save a lot of money when compared to non-energy efficient electrical appliances. A table showing the highest and lowest efficiency of different electronic appliances was given to us.

The use of air-conditioners: setting air-conditioner at 240Celsius and deactivate it when it rains, save a lot of energy from being wasted.

Students are divided into four groups to audit usage at several places around the school - the hall, the library, staff room and other areas. Students started walking around looking for electrical appliances to calculate the electric power.

The lecturer says that anything that rotates consumes energy and it should be well-maintained as it takes more energy to rotate if any of the parts were not properly maintained.

The fridge should be 2/3 full, whereas the freezer should be 3/4 full. We also need to plan what to take from the fridge as each time the door is opened 30% of the cold air will escape, resulting to more energy wasted.

He also told us about a proposal - a punishable tariff; the more you use, the more you pay.Â Students are now able to calculate the usage of electricity in their homes, which would help to conserve energy and money.

The principal, Mr. Ong Hock Thye, said this knowledge would help the students because they would make a world of change if the knowledge acquired is put to good use. He added that FOMCA's employees are experienced in the field of conservation and Sri Permata is fortunate to have its President Datuk N. Marimuthu in the school PTA committee.

He hopes that what had started in SMK Sri Permata will be practised by others outside the school, like the garbage enzyme campaign whcih has started since March. He is also confident that what the school is doing will bring a change to many. He thanked the students for taking part in the talk.Students were asked to give comments on the talk.

Generally, many benefited from the talk. They learnt how to calculate the electricity tariffs, learn to conserve and also able to look for energy saving appliances.

1st Carbon Challenge by BP@Sri Permata

It was raining heavily today, but our team managed to finish a CC session with 54 participants from Form 1 to Form 4. As always, the session started with an introduction to BP Companies in Malaysia and the programme that we are carrying out.
We divided them to 4 groups and asked them to present their ideas on climate change scenario and some proposed solutions. The groups gave wonderful presentations in only 3 minutes for each group.
It seems that the students have learnt and are aware on the effects of climate change such as extreme wheather, flood, landslide and forest fire.
The teacher had asked us to have another two of CC sessions for their students and other teachers. We really hope that the participants will apply what they have learnt in their daily life.

Green Sports Day

On the 17th of April, in conjunction with Sports Day, the team had a booth set up to exhibit articles on environmental saving and to promote awareness amongst parents, teachers and students. At 7 o' clock in the morning the team was ready with all the materials and decorations. All members of the team dressed up with recyclable items to attract attention to promote our awareness campaign. The parents that turned up at our booth were informed with environmental facts and collected donations to support our activities throughout the year. At 10.30 a.m., we cleared up the booth and kept all the laminated reading articles for further use.We then got ready to recite our green pledge during the prize giving ceremony. During the prize giving ceremony, the team led the "green pledge" in front of the students, teachers and parents. We hope that the community has received our message with open hearts and has started to go green. Reported by, Lim

'No Styrofoam' Campaign

On the 17th of April, in conjuntion with Sports Day,the librarians launched the 'no-styrofoam' campaign by selling drinks with paper cups instead of styrofoam cups. They did this so as to not use styrofoam which cannot be recycled whereas the paper cups could. They also prepared a bin for the cups to be thrown into as they could then collect it and send it for recycling.

Many students thought it was a good idea and supported her all the way. She started clearing during the 1 week School Holiday break in March and will continue doing so each available hour that she has.

04 April 2009: Students from the Math and Science Society and MNS (afternoon session) together with their advisors started to clear the plot of land. The boys and girls found it interesting yet tiring digging and pulling the long overgrown grass. Nevertheless, they managed to clear the land and it ready for planting.

This event was carried out on a Saturday where most of the Uniform Units had their weekly meetings. The idea of making garbage enzyme for each of their units was well received by all and they stayed back to participate. This is indeed another good step to create and spread our awareness to others. We must all work together hand in hand if we want to suceed in our mission to save the Earth. Of course there may be some people who do not care and this is the kind of problem we face each day but keep in mind, if we do not start NOW, then who will?

Garbage Enzyme Demonstration on Open Day

On the 27 March, the school had an Open Day for parents / guardians of students. They talked to class teachers about the students academic performance. About 70% of the parents came. The Core Team prepared a brochure for the parents which highlighted the awareness campaign by BP myscience. Apart from that, they also demonstrated on how to make their own Garbage Enzyme. Many parents stopped by to find out, some asked for free sample and some promised that they would go home and do it. It was yet another BIG success in our mission to save the Earth! 28 March: Earth Hour @ Sri Permata

This year, EARTH HOUR program was transformed into a global election between Earth and global warming. On 28 March 2009(Saturday),8.30P.M (Malaysian time) millions of people around the globe united for one hour and switch off their lights to show that they care about the future.For the first time in history, people of all ages, races, nationalities and background had officially participated in this program.

A short survey was done in SMK Sri Permata on the number of students who participated in the EARTH HOUR program. It was found that of the students had actually participated and this clearly potrays the support conveyed by the student towards the aim of the WWF which is to raise awareness among the public on the current global climate calamity.

Meantime, an interview had been done among a few students. According to Marissa Lee Sher May from class 2 Berani, she and her family went out for a walk in the neighbourhood with their neighbours during the earth hour. She felt wonderful because they had supported the earth hour program. On the other hand, Leong Zhi Quan from class 2 Ikhlas said " I stayed home and had a chat with my family. It was nice contributing some effort to save the enviroment."

Besides that, SMK Sri Permata's headmaster, En. Ong had also taken part in this program. He said " As like everyone else does, i switch off my lights too. But i switch it off from 8.30p.m till 10.00p.m. I was meditating during that time. It was very good because I could use that time wisely to think of things which i have no time to think of. After carrying out these activities, SMK SRI PERMATA is planning to increase the awareness among the students, teachers, and parents.

23 Mar: Kick start - Saving Mother Earth through Garbage Enzyme

We started this semester with our main challenge 'Saving Mother Earth Through Garbage Enzyme'. If we utilise our vegetable waste and fruit peels to produce garbage enzyme, we can stop kitchen waste from releasing methane (a greenhouse gas) and at the same time generate enough ozone gas to ease global warming.

Pn Yip CY, our Penolong Kanan KOKO and Miss Loo our main challenge co-ordinator, demonstrated to the students during our Monday assemblies ie. at 7.30am and 1.30pm how garbage like fruit peels can be used to 'clean' Mother Earth!

FACTS:
Production of garbage enzyme will generate ozone gas O3, which reduces CO2 in the atmosphere and heavy metal in clouds that trap heat, thereby reducing the greenhouse effect and global warming.

Benefits and uses (extracted from www.justlifeshop.com/changeclimate) are:

*Save Money: turns kitchen waste to DIY natural household cleaners.
*Multiple Uses: natural household cleaner, air purifier, deodoriser, insecticide, detergent, body care, car care, organic fertiliser, etc.
*Reduce Pollution: Disposed garbage releases methane gas that can trap heat 21x more than CO2.
*Purify Air, Increase Oxygen Level: removes odour, clears toxic air due to smoking, car exhaust, chemical residues of household products, etc..
*Natural Pesticides: reduces mosquitoes, flies, rats, cockcroaches, etc.
*Anti-bacterial and Anti-virus: natural antiseptic for homes.
*Prevents Drainpipe Blockage: releases residues accumulated in pipes, basins, toilet bowls.

What Do We Need .... Only
Ÿ Air tight plastic container (Used oil/water containers)
Ÿ Water
Ÿ Fruit and vegetable waste (any fruit peels esp lemon peels which can produce garbage enzyme with a nice odour)
Ÿ Brown sugar

Step1 : 10 parts of water (Fill up 60% of container)
Step2 : 1 Part sugar (=10% water content)
Step3 : 3 Parts kitchen waste (Fill up 80% of container)
Steps 4: Close tight - Place at cool, dry and well ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight.Keep 3 months (Open daily to release gases during first month)

Ratio: 1 part of brown sugar : 3 parts of fruit peels : 10parts of water
for example 1kg of brown sugar : 3kg fruit peels : 10litres of water

Take note:
Do not use glass or metal containers that cannot expand.

11 Mar: Say Not to Styrofoam Cups Campaign

This campaign was held on the 11th of March 2009, in conjunction with the Prefects’ Canteen Day.
One week before the occasion, pupils were informed about the BP myScience Challenge which the school has undertaken. Students were told to bring their own water containers, cups or mugs in order to buy drinks from the various drinks stalls set up on Canteen Day. In this way the usage of styrofoam cups would be totally avoided.On Canteen Day, the pupils adhered to the campaign thus, making it a success. SAY NO TO STYROFOAM CUPS.

4th Mar: 1st BP myScience 2009 meeting

Event Date: 4th March 2009

Our first meeting was held on the 4th of March 2009 at the Audio Visual Room of SMK Sri Permata with the attendance of 20 of its committee members. Pn. Chua Siwe Geck, the programme co-coordinator, briefed the team on its mission and challenges.

The main challenge we have undertaken is to save Mother Earth through Garbage Enzyme. Besides that we have accepted the challenge to reduce the usage of water and electricity in school, to cultivate a fruit and herbal garden in school and by recycling thus, creating awareness in our community the need to save the environment.

This challenge will span over the months of March to September 2009, with the first activity being
‘Say No to Styrofoam Cups’, to be carried out during the Prefects’ Canteen Day on the 11th of March 2009. The other activities to be carried out have been charted on our timeline sheet.

In order to carry out the various activities planned, a few teams have to be formed with each team comprising 8 to 10 students and 2 teachers, involving various clubs and societies in school.

22 Feb : Apa itu BP myScience Challenge

Event Date: 20-22 February 2009

Sebanyak 12 sekolah rendah dan 11 sekolah menengah di sekitar Lembah Kelang, Pahang dan Terengganu akan memulakan Cabaran BP myScience untuk mencari strategi terbaik mengurangkan pengeluaran karbon dioksida (CO2) di persekitaran sekolah masing-masing.

Cabaran yang akan bermula pada Mac ini memberi peluang kepada para peserta iaitu pelajar dan guru bekerjasama mewujudkan strategi berkenaan dalam tempoh kira-kira lapan bulan sehingga tarikh akhir iaitu pada 31 Oktober tahun ini.

Cabaran BP myScience merupakan yang julung-julung kali diadakan melibatkan pelajar-pelajar berusia 10 tahun sehingga 16 tahun.
Ia dibahagikan kepada dua kategori iaitu kategori sekolah rendah melibatkan dua sekolah rendah di Kuala Lumpur, Selangor (4), Kuantan (3) dan tiga buah sekolah rendah di Kertih.
Kategori sekolah menengah pula melibatkan lima sekolah di Kuala Lumpur, Selangor (2), Kuantan (2) dan dua sekolah menengah di Kertih.

Cabaran BP myScience menyediakan hadiah keseluruhan bernilai RM87,200.
Setiap kategori sekolah yang memenangi tempat pertama akan menerima wang tunai RM5,000 dan pelbagai hadiah lain.

Sebahagian daripada guru yang menyertai bengkel BP myScience anjuran BP Asia Pacific di Hotel KL International Kuala Lumpur baru-baru ini.
Tempat kedua akan memenangi hadiah wang tunai RM3,000 dan tempat ketiga akan memenangi hadiah wang tunai RM2,000.
Beberapa kategori hadiah turut diadakan iaitu Laman Web Terbaik (RM500), Pameran dan Penyampaian Terbaik (RM500) dan hadiah saguhati terhadap guru-guru dari sekolah yang menang.

Pertandingan tersebut merupakan kerjasama Perkhidmatan Pendidikan BP, Kementerian Pelajaran dan Persatuan Pencinta Alam Malaysia (MNS).

Carbon Footprint iaitu ukuran kesan aktiviti harian terhadap alam sekitar terutama perubahan cuaca adalah berhubung kait dengan jumlah gas rumah hijau yang dihasilkan dalam kehidupan seharian seperti penjanaan elektrik, kepanasan dan pengangkutan.

Tujuan utama pertandingan itu ialah untuk mendidik generasi muda mengenai perubahan cuaca dan tindakan yang boleh diambil untuk mengurangkan kesan pencemaran di negara ini mahupun secara global.

Selain itu ia bertujuan mengurangkan pengeluaran karbon dioksida dan pengeluaran rumah hijau yang lain dan sekitar sekolah, menggalakkan kepimpinan dan pemberian kuasa kepada para pelajar, memupuk kerjasama antara guru dan pelajar untuk mengurangkan pengeluaran gas rumah hijau.

Pertandingan itu juga turut menekankan usaha memupuk generasi yang menyokong pemuliharaan alam sekitar, mengukur pemahaman kesedaran Carbon Footprint di sekolah dan mengukur usaha mengoptimumkan tenaga yang boleh memberi faedah kepada pelajar dan sekolah.

Tema bagi pertandingan tersebut ialah How Can We Reduce Our Carbon Footprint @ School (energy optimization) yang menekankan kesedaran kepada para peserta tentang kesan aktiviti harian terhadap alam sekitar.
Carbon Footprint iaitu ukuran kesan aktiviti harian terhadap alam sekitar terutama perubahan cuaca adalah berhubung kait dengan jumlah gas rumah hijau yang dihasilkan dalam kehidupan seharian seperti penjanaan elektrik, kepanasan dan pengangkutan.

Tiga peringkat cabaran ialah Schools Link iaitu memperkenalkan perkhidmatan modul-modul pendidikan Sains BP dalam program dan aktiviti kelab sains sekolah terlibat.
Carbon Challenge iaitu cadangan perancangan tindakan kesedaran perubahan cuaca dan usaha pengoptimuman tenaga dan mempromosi kehidupan yang mesra alam.

Sembang Sains pula ialah sesi ceramah Sains di sekolah untuk mempromosi kesedaran sains yang akan disampaikan oleh pelbagai pihak yang terlibat.

Peralatan solar - Bengkel BP myScience untuk guru sekolah rendah dan menengah.
Pelajar dan guru terlibat akan turut dibawa ke Ma Daerah, Terengganu pada Mei sebagai salah satu sesi Sembang Sains, promosi pemuliharaan penyu di kawasan perlindungan penyu.
Majlis penerangan kepada guru-guru sekolah yang terlibat telah diadakan di Kuala Lumpur baru-baru ini dengan dihadiri oleh Pengarah Eksekutif BP Asia Pacific (M) Sdn. Bhd., Datuk Rosli Hussin dan Penolong Pengarah Cawangan Kokurikulum Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia, Raja Azhar Raja Sulaiman.

Setiap sekolah akan diberi wang perbelanjaan untuk projek masing-masing yang dikenali sebagai Seed Money berjumlah RM1,000 setiap sekolah.

Penilaian pertandingan memfokuskan antaranya perbezaan peratus bilangan karbon tenaga yang digunakan oleh sekolah seperti elektrik dan air.
Ia juga menilai terhadap projek-projek kesedaran karbon seperti penanaman pokok, kempen Tidak kepada Plastik, pengemaskinian laman web, pameran semasa majlis penyampaian hadiah yang akan diadakan di Pusat Sains Negara (PSN) pada November ini.
